1. Alhaji Bai Konte
He is a great kora player. The reason I like it is that he is the first one to take the kora to the western world, he tried a lot, he is kora hero. He is my grandfather. He always sings a lot about giving the message to people.
2. Salif Keita – Moussoulou
I love him. My mother listened to him very well. Many of family they love his music, that’s why I love these songs when I was young.
3. Tata Dindin Jobarteh & Salamband Matta
My cousin brother. He was a great kora player in Gambia. He passed away. But still we don’t forget him.

1. Niahat Khan – Rag Bhimpalasi
Its’s a deep one, you can tell it’s an ancient mystical story without words. I chose a different dimension of music. I heard it in a deep meditation and i could see the story being told in front of my eyes.

Nina Simone, she’s amazing! I like her devotion and her freedom.

2. Youssou N’dour & Neneh Cherry – 7 Seconds
I love this song because it is cross-cultural, bringing people together in the same place and the same frequency. This song reminds us never to underestimate another human being, we have equality, the blood is only one colour, it is red. This is a beautiful song and a good teacher.
3. Miriam Make – Africa Is Where My Heart Lies
I really love this song, I have listened to it so many times. It reminds me where I come from, my roots, the elements and mother nature, they always speak to me, where I am at the moment, my heart is with me everywhere I go and Africa will always be in my heart.

1. Rokia Traoré – Ka Moun Kè
Toen ik de Malinese zangeres Rokia Traoré voor het eerst hoorde werd ik instant verliefd op haar stem. De mix van traditionele en moderne sounds vind ik prachtig. Die kalebas is zó lekker… Hier kan ik eindeloos maar luisteren.
2. Joe Zawinul Syndicate- Indiscretions
Joe Zawinul was een absolute pionier en zijn tijd ver vooruit. Zijn bandleden zijn zó waanzinnig goed. Dit vind ik zó groovy en het blijft zó spannend. Een meesterlijke wereldreis in klank.
3. Maeba – Western
Deze heerlijke muzikant genaamd “Western” uit Botswana kwam ik bij toeval tegen op youtube. Ik ben fan! Met slechts een paar gitaarsnaren op een simpel akoestisch gitaartje is hij een héle band op zichzelf.
De dynamiek met de zangeres vind ik helemaal heerlijk! Kunnen we hen een keertje bij Club Kazoo uitnodigen?

Although I could name many songs in multiple genres that inspired me I will name some representatives.
1. John Coltrane – Giant Steps
It is a perfect example of a jazzsong that is so challenging I, you, we can spend a lifetime studying it.
2. The Beatles – Blackbird
One of McCartney’s many brilliant compositions. I figured it out on guitar myself at age 14 but was corrected by Macca himself who explained onstage how he plays it.
3. António Carlos Jobim – Águas de Março.
One of Jobim’s best, but listed here as example of all the fantastic music from Brasil. But like I said: I can mention many many songs!

Oumou Sangaré from Mali, I love this woman’s song because she sings a lot about culture and values. She sings in Bambara dialect of Mandinka, so I just understand a little bit. I love her songs because I listened to her songs since I was young. My mother loves her songs a lot!

Jaliba is the famous kora player in the Gambia. He is our Youssou N’Dour, we listened to him a lot, he sings about culture and values. I love his songs!
3. Baba Maal – Best Selection
This is Baba Maal from Senegal. He is also singing a lot about our culture. Because he is a Fula, I listened to his music to understand more of my culture. Where he comes from in Senegal is where my great grand parents come from and they came to Gambia. He not only sings about the culture, but also Africa as a whole. He is a great singer and he is one of my favourites. I like Baba Maal a lot!
